This October, Te Toi Mahara 2024 at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds will bring together artists, cultural leaders, and change-makers from across Ngāpuhi-nui-tonu to celebrate and explore the future of toi—a concept that extends far beyond what many might consider “art.”

Toi Ngāpuhi Chairman, Rau Hoskins say the summit presented by Toi Ngāpuhi is an expression of Mana Motuhake.

“Toi is more than just creative expression – it is an embodiment of Mana Motuhake, knowledge, tradition, and identity. For generations, toi has passed down stories, honoured whakapapa, and connected te ao wairua with te ao kikokiko. As Ngāpuhi-nui-tonu gather for this summit, the role of toi as a vehicle for cultural resilience and growth will be at the heart of discussions,” Rau says.

Te Toi Mahara creates spaces for cultural excellence to thrive and for knowledge to be shared. From whakairo in the Wharau Whakairo, raranga in Te Tira Ranga, to the traditions of Kaupapa Moko, the summit offers an immersive and inclusive experience that encourages participants to engage with these living traditions.

Supported by Creative New Zealand as the core funding partner, Te Toi Mahara is a platform that enables the flourishing of toi for generations to come. That support underscores the importance of cultural resilience and growth through mahi toi.

Creative New Zealand Kaiwhakahaere Matua, Te Kaupapa o Toi Aotearoa, Haniko Te Kurapa says the relationship between the two organisations is founded upon the declaration of Tāngata whenua identity expressed in He Whakapūtanga o ngā Rangatira o Nu Tireni 1835 and the recognition of kawanatanga, tino rangatiratanga and rite tahi-tanga, expressed in Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840.

Te Toi Mahara is exactly the kind of initiative that we want to support because of the long-term focus on strengthening and growing Māori arts,” Haniko says.

Rau Hoskins says the summit’s theme, Mātiro Whakamua – looking beyond the horizon – captures the wairua of forward-thinking innovation that will guide discussions.

“Looking ahead, the future of toi will be shaped by those who pursue excellence, push creative boundaries while staying grounded in cultural identity.”

He adds, “As the summit approaches, one thing is clear: the future of toi in Ngāpuhi-nui -tonu is bright, rooted in tradition, yet boundless in its potential.”
