Bursaries, fellowships, scholarships and residencies

As part of a partnership agreement with Creative New Zealand the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada offers Māori artists the opportunity to take part in select indigenous residency programmes.

New Zealand visual artists were able to work on an approved project and undertake professional development opportunities in Berlin. The residency included travel to and accommodation in Berlin, a monthly stipend and incidentals.

An established writer is able to work on an approved project for up to eleven months in Berlin, Germany. The residency includes travel to and accommodation in Berlin, a monthly stipend and incidentals.

This internship, offered annually since 2005, is the result of a partnership between The Dowse, the Blumhardt Foundation and Creative New Zealand. It is a legacy of New Zealand potter Dame Doreen Blumhardt's commitment to arts education.

This scholarship is funded by a bequest by Jack Malfroy Butland through the Butland Music Foundation which was established in 1994. It enables talented young musicians to further performance studies overseas.

The fellowship is awarded to a choreographer who has produced a significant body of work.  It provides time and resources for the fellow to commit to a period of investigation, experimentation or research in their practice.

The fellowship was offered annually for its first three years (2004–2006) and is now offered biennially. It provides the time and/or resources for an established practitioner to commit to a period of experimentation or research in their practice.

The fellowship, offered for the first time in 2003, was renamed in recognition of the late Dr Michael King for his contribution to literature and his advocacy for a major fellowship for New Zealand writers. The fellowship enables established New Zealand writers, with a significant publication record, to work on a major project which will take two years or more to complete. 

This three-month residency is offered by Creative New Zealand in partnership with the National University of Samoa. It is an opportunity for an established New Zealand-based Pacific artist to interact and share his/her skills with the Samoan arts community.

The Edwin Carr Foundation was established in 2004 with interest from the estate of the late Edwin Carr. It enables young composers to further their studies overseas.

This annual residency is offered by Creative New Zealand in partnership with Fulbright New Zealand. It enables a New Zealand writer of Pacific heritage to work on a project exploring Pacific identity, culture or history. The three-month residency is based at the Centre for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawaii. 

This scholarship was established in 1985 with interest from a bequest by Jack Wynnegate McGill. It is for advanced studies or investigations into music in an international setting. This scholarship is administered through the Public Trust on behalf of the Jack Wynnegate McGill Estate with the assistance of Creative New Zealand.

The fellowship was conceived in the late sixties by Celia Manson and Sheilah Winn who set up the Winn-Manson Menton Trust which funds it. It was first sponsored by Meridian Energy, then by New Zealand Post from 2007 to 2011. Creative New Zealand contributed a grant in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

The scholarship is funded by interest from a gift of $50,000 in 1989 from the Louis Johnson Estate and by Creative New Zealand. It supports published writers or presented playwrights, at an early stage in their career, to work on an approved project.

From 2000-2016 New Zealand visual artists worked on approved projects and undertook professional development opportunities in New York at the International Studio & Curatorial Program.

This scholarship, established in 2009, is funded through a bequest from the estate of the late Mr Brent Lewis with the assistance of Creative New Zealand, and administered through the Public Trust. It enables young musicians to undertake study or gain further musical experience at a tertiary institution in New Zealand or overseas. 

Annual bursary awarded to a published writer or playwright at the early stage of their career to write new work. The Todd Corporation Ltd contributes $10,000 towards this bursary and the balance is provided by Creative New Zealand.

The Toi Sqwigwialtxw (pronounced: sgweg-voi-out) residency is an exchange agreement between Creative New Zealand and the Longhouse Education and Cultural Centre in Washington State. It has been offered biennially since 2005 to established artists of Māori descent.

This award promotes and encourages choreography in New Zealand contemporary dance, and especially the work of emerging choreographers. It was established in 1999 from a bequest by Mrs Lang.
