Professional development for performing arts practitioners to take part in a programme of activities to build their international experience and capability through attendance at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
British Council New Zealand and the Pacific are supporting this initiative to give artists and practitioners the opportunity to understand the Edinburgh Festival context and the resources needed for future presentation opportunities at the Festival. This initiative has been designed to enable participants to build their international touring capabilities for 2024 and beyond.
There are two participant cohorts:

Teina - open to performing arts practitioners who have not previously participated in Creative New Zealand Edinburgh opportunities and are considering presenting work at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Tuakana - limited to performing arts practitioners that have already engaged with Edinburgh through previous Creative New Zealand iterations of either Momentum or Edinburgh Festivals Intensives programmes and are considering presenting work at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Teina is open to performing arts practitioners who have not previously participated in Creative New Zealand Edinburgh opportunities and are considering presenting work at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The Teina cohort will participate in a seven-day bespoke programme, including site visits, practical skills-building workshops, contextual seminars and networking events. There will also be opportunities to exchange ideas with international peers so delegates can develop their networks and pursue opportunities to collaborate and present work.
Tuakana is limited to performing arts practitioners that have already engaged with Edinburgh through previous Creative New Zealand iterations of either Momentum or Edinburgh Festivals Intensives programmes.
The Tuakana programme will enable practitioners to return in order to re-establish relationships and networks and to create opportunities for future presentations and collaboration. This is a self-led programme, however, participants are expected to take a leadership role by sharing knowledge with Teina participants or participating in Fringe events.
To apply for the Edinburgh Festival Intensive initiative you must:
- be a performing arts practitioner
- meet the general eligibility criteria
- have a tour-ready work for presentation in 2024
- be available to travel between 16-22 August 2023.
There are two participant cohorts - Teina and Tuakana.
To apply for Edinburgh Festival Intensive - Teina you must have:
- interest and capacity to develop your international networks, pursue international collaborative projects and deliver an international project or tour-ready work
- not previously participated in Creative New Zealand Edinburgh opportunities.
To apply for Edinburgh Festival Intensive - Tuakana you must have:
- previously presented at the Edinburgh Fringe as part of Creative New Zealand in NZ at Edinburgh seasons, or participated in the Momentum and Edinburgh Festivals Intensive programmes.
You cannot apply if you, your organisation, or key members of your project team are in breach of the conditions of a current funding agreement.
Participants will receive:
- a grant of $5,700 towards the costs of airfares, insurance, per diems, and ticket contribution (responsibility of the participant to organise)
- seven nights of paid accommodation in Edinburgh (arranged by Creative New Zealand).
The Teina cohort will participate in a bespoke programme of activities organised by Creative New Zealand.
Equity Fund
To enable fair access to this opportunity, Creative New Zealand will offer an Equity Fund for one participant for costs up to $5,700. This could include provision for a travelling companion, or childcare support, for example. Contact Creative New Zealand if you would like to discuss this further.

Your Edinburgh Festivals Intensive application needs to include the following information:
- Describe how this opportunity will support your career/practice/artistic goals.
- Describe the work you are planning to tour in 2024.
Include details of the types of venues and audiences it is most suited to and attach or provide links to supporting information such as reviews, images or showreels. - Explain why this opportunity is important now.
- Outline your experience touring shows domestically and or internationally, or your ability to develop relationships. Attach your brief biography or CV.
If you require access to Equity Funding:
- Outline what type of support you require and an indication of costs (up to $5,700)

After the round closes, staff check your application is eligible before it moves to assessment.
Eligible applications are assessed by Creative New Zealand staff using the following criteria.
- Clear articulation of urgency
- Goals for participation are clearly defined
- Tour-ready work, or collaborations, appropriate
- Required skill set to fully participate in programme demonstrated
- Leadership skills demonstrated (Tuakana only)
For Tuakana, priority will be given to applicants who:
- have engaged with an Edinburgh Festival director/producer/venue to collaborate on a project in Edinburgh in August 2024, including presenting work and/or co-commissioning
- have a strategic partner pursuing collaborative or exchange projects
- are Māori, Pacific, Asian or Whaikaha arts practitioners.
