We’re inviting the Pacific arts community to continue the recent talanoa to help chart the future of Pacific arts.
The community’s views will play an important part in developing a new strategy to guide the way Creative New Zealand encourages, promotes and supports Pacific arts over the next five years.
Pacific artists, arts practitioners, groups, organisations and others in the Pacific arts community are all invited to comment on a discussion paper that builds on the dialogue started at the Pacific Arts Summit held in March.
Arts Council Deputy Chair Caren Rangi says the strategy will be comprehensive.
“We will use the strategy to guide all of our work in relation to Pacific arts. So as well as our dedicated Pacific arts funding programmes, it’ll also apply to general arts funding, our investments, grants, as well as international, capability and advocacy programmes. The strategy will also help to guide future initiatives,” she says.
The discussion paper explores four potential areas of focus.
- The people – Tagata – considering the needs of Pasifika artists, communities, participants and audiences.
- The journey – Vaka – looking at ways to strengthen Pacific-focussed arts organisations and Pacific arts spaces.
- Linking with others – Va – looking at ways other agencies and organisations can work together to encourage, promote and support Pacific arts.
- The source – Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiva – emphasising a need to strengthen links with the home islands.
“We want your views on our thinking to date and how our approach might be improved,” Caren Rangi says.
