Pacific artists from across the country gathered recently to help chart the future development of Pacific arts at the Creative New Zealand Pacific Arts Summit 2018.
Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage and Associate Minister for Pacific Peoples, Hon Carmel Sepuloni opened the two day summit, at Te Papa’s Te Marae.
More than 150 artists representing a diversity of artforms and Pacific peoples shared experience, knowledge and opinions during robust talanoa at the two day summit in March.
Topics of discussion included heritage and contemporary perspectives, the impact of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, and how to enable future success.
Through this process of talanoa participants also contributed to the development of Creative New Zealand’s new long-term strategy for Pacific arts.
“While I do not underestimate the task we have ahead of us to develop a responsive strategy, I am more than confident we have rich material to work from. We appreciate people taking the time to participate in the summit and providing such open and frank feedback,” said Arts Council Deputy Chair, Caren Rangi.
The new strategy is due in the second half of this year, and a discussion document to further the conversation will be released in late April.
