Creative New Zealand has confirmed changes to its operating model following an extensive consultation and reconsultation process with staff.

The changes are designed to ensure the organisation is well positioned to deliver on the ambitions of Tū Mai Rā, Toi Aotearoa, Toi Ora and the Pacific Arts Strategy, while responding to the evolving needs of the arts sector and communities across Aotearoa.

The new operating model strengthens Creative New Zealand’s focus on five strategic priorities: growing investment in the arts from a broader range of sources, strengthening arts sector capability, building public support for the arts, boosting international impact, and empowering communities by placing decision-making and resources closer to artists and communities.

Arts Council Chair Kent Gardner says this change continues an intentional and strategic programme of organisational renewal for Creative New Zealand.

“Over the past two years, the Arts Council has deliberately reset Creative New Zealand for the future. We appointed a new Chief Executive, worked together to develop a new long-term strategy, and have now aligned the organisation’s structure to deliver it. This is not a reaction to short-term pressures – it’s the implementation of a long-term plan.”

Chief Executive Tumu Whakarae Gretchen La Roche says the review was an important step in ensuring Creative New Zealand is structured to maximise its impact and support the future success of the arts sector.

“The arts and funding environment we’re operating in is dynamic and continually evolving, and it’s important that Creative New Zealand can respond to this. This review and change has been about ensuring we’re organised and resourced to deliver on our strategic priorities, and effectively support artists, communities and the wider arts sector into the future.

“We also recognise that change can create uncertainty. Our focus is on supporting our people through the transition and ensuring our work with the artists, organisations and communities we serve is maintained, including retaining valuable experience, expertise and institutional knowledge.”

The new operating model reduces overall staff numbers from 84 roles (13 of which are currently vacant) to 55 roles.

Implementation of the new operating model will begin following the confirmation process, with the organisation focused on maintaining operational continuity while embedding the new structure.
