Time in Hawai’i has inspired multidisciplinary artist Natasha Ratuva (Kadavu, Bua) to explore new directions in her masi practice (Fijian tapa cloth). As one of the successful applicants for the Early Careers Fund - Toi Tipu Toi Rea, Natasha received support to travel to Hawai’i for a three-week mentorship and knowledge-sharing opportunity.

“The support from the Early Careers Fund was amazing. It validated my creative journey and opened many doors to new collaborations. Having my husband and baby with me meant my accessibility needs were met, allowing me to fully embrace the experience,” says Natasha.

During her time in Hawai‘i, Natasha was invited to engage with local curators, including those based in museum spaces dedicated to Pacific, Melanesian, and Micronesian art and gave masi workshops to local Pacific communities.

“Engaging with the community and passing on these skills was the highlight for me. It reinforces the importance of our indigenous Pasifika knowledge systems and its accessibility to our diasporic communities,” she says.

At the Bishop Museum, Natasha explored the museum's masi collection and learned about the museum’s plans for future preservation. As a result of her time with fellow cultural experts, Natasha is interested in how masi in museum collections can be made more accessible through digitisation and engaging with local community leaders.

Reflecting on her experience applying for the fund, Natasha believes that no idea is too ambitious and that refining concepts, seeking advice, and finding ways to sustain a career in the long-term are essential steps for any artist.

“No idea is too much—refine it, talk to a Practice Advisor from Creative New Zealand, and find ways to nourish your career in the long term. The Early Careers Fund is a great chance for artists to develop a solid foundation in the arts space.”

With the support of her artistic community, Natasha Ratuva is looking to create new opportunities and collaborations that celebrate the diverse richness of creatives from the Black Pacific.

The Early Careers Fund is now open for applications. Please check the eligibility criteria and speak with a advisor.

Applications close at 1pm, Thursday 6 March 2025
