The cultural narratives of Ngāi Te Ruahikihiki ki Taumutu inspired Toro Atua, a large-scale public artwork created for Rolleston’s reinvigorated town centre by Dr Areta Wilkinson (Ngāi Tahu).

Toro Atua is made up of twenty stainless steel figures on four-metre golden poles spaced through the Te Area Ātea reserve. The shapes reference the ancestral rock art of Te Waipounamu, translating hand-drawn shapes to polished metal. The work shimmers in daylight and is illuminated by specialist lighting at night.

Find out more about the inspiration and meaning of the piece and the many organisations that supported its production on Scape Public Art

Dr Areta Wilkinson is one of the artists featured in the second series of Art Work, stories of artists’ working lives on The Spinoff, commissioned by Creative New Zealand. We’ve previewed the series in our story about Art Work on our website

Scape Public Art is one of 58 New Zealand Arts Organisations that receives funding through the multi-year Toi Uru Kahikatea investment programme.
