Creative New Zealand is partnering under the Pacific Arts Strategy with Bats Theatre to offer the Pacific Producer Residency for the second year. The 14-week residency is open for applications from experienced Pasifika producers across Aotearoa.
Based at BATS Theatre in Wellington, the purpose of this residency is to create an opportunity for an experienced Pasifika producer to work in Te Whanganui-a-Tara and become part of the Bats whānau. The producer will be encouraged to use this time to develop or take on new contracts and to further build their connections in the industry.
Creative and flexible, the residency is to be designed by the resident producer. Last year Teherenui Koteka was the awarded the residency for the first time in 2023. Of the residency she said:
“I'm super stoked! Producing is an area I specifically wanted to upskill in, and there's no better place to do that than at BATS”.
"There is a shortage of Pasifika producers in New Zealand – I self-produce a lot of work and have also noticed a real lack of Cook Island producers."
BATS Theatre will tailor its support based on what the Pasifika producer wishes to achieve by the end of the residency. The candidate will be selected in collaboration with industry leaders and Creative New Zealand Pacific Arts, with the residency led by BATS.
Creative New Zealand Pacific Arts Strategy develops many new strategic opportunities via key partnerships to achieve long term goals for a sustainable and resilient Pacific Arts sector in Aotearoa and globally.
Applications are open now and close on 19 July.
