In an effort to protect against the impacts and the on-going threat of COVID-19 on mātauranga toi, the Toi Ake - Mātauranga Māori Te Awe Kōtuku Fund opened earlier this month for applications ranging from $5k - $75k from iwi, hapū, marae, whakapapa-based rōpū and mātāwaka to retain mātauranga toi.
The fund overseen by Te Manatu Taonga (Ministry for Culture and Heritage) as part of the Government’s efforts to safeguard Mātauranga Māori allocated $940,000 to Creative New Zealand to distribute over four funding rounds.
The first of four Toi Ake funding rounds opened 22 February 2021 and closes 26 March 2021 with further funding rounds over the next year. To support applications Creative New Zealand Senior Māori advisors hosted online information ‘Zui’ to answer questions about the opportunity.
Over 50 ngā toi Māori practitioners and arts organisations from throughout the country joined the Zui hosted by Senior, Creative New Zealand Advisors, Haniko Te Kurapa and Kereama Te Ua.
Questions of particular interest included: What do you mean by ‘heritage ngā toi Māori’?
This Fund aims to help protect, cultivate and retain the mātauranga related to heritage or customary Māori arts. This could include: taonga puoro, tārai waka, kaupapa waka, whakairo, rāranga, tāniko, kākahu, tukutuku, kōwhaiwhai, tā moko, kapa haka, mōteatea, waiata ā-ringa, waiata tawhito, poi, waiata haka, pao, mau rākau, whaikōrero, karanga, whakapapa recitation, te reo me onā tikanga, whakairo, kōrero paki, pakiwaitara, karetao, whare tapere and whakaraka.
A further zui on the Toi Ake and Arts Grants funds will be held on Thursday 11 March 12pm – 1pm, 2021 hosted by Senior Advisors Kereama Te Ua and Aroha Rangi for those who need support to apply and ask further questions.
