Due to COVID-19, organisers have cancelled the annual Internationale Handwerksmesse trade fair in Munich, Germany, one of the largest and most influential trade fairs globally, where the work of several Kiwi contemporary jewellers was to have been exhibited in March.
Our thoughts are with the Kiwi artists who have been preparing to attend or send work, public gallery Objectspace (who coordinate and drive the sector’s participation and reach at the fair), and The National gallery, who had been preparing to attend and represent 11 artists.
Two of the artists preparing to attend were Becky Bliss and Nina van Duijnhoven, both selected to exhibit at Schmuck 2020, the oldest and most highly regarded contemporary jewellery exhibition in the world and part of the fair.
Other artists due to exhibit their work during Munich Jewellery Week, but outside the main fair, look set to continue. Lisa Walker was invited to present her show, “She wants to go to her bedroom but she can’t be bothered’, (recently shown at Melbourne and Apeldoorn with Creative New Zealand support), at the internationally renowned 19th century Villa Stuck, an art museum and gallery. Lisa has been able to continue with her show, already installed and open, and reports that everything is carrying on as planned for the surrounding museums and galleries.
We also understand that Karl Frtisch, Warwick Freeman and Renée Pearson will continue with plans to exhibit in the Stones: the final cut exhibition in the Galerie Handwerk, also outside the main fair.
From the cancellation announcement: “This decision was made in light of the spread of the Coronavirus/Covid-19 and the urgent recommendation of the Bavarian government's crisis team to cancel or postpone any large international trade shows until further notice.”
The next Internationale Handwerksmesse will take place from 10 to 14 March 2021.
