Creative New Zealand is calling for artists of Pasifika heritage to apply for the opportunity to be the 2019 Samoa Artist in Residence.
A partnership with the National University of Samoa, with support from the New Zealand High Commission in Apia, the annual residency is funded by Creative New Zealand and provides NZD $15,000 for the artist towards an artist stipend, accommodation and travel costs.
The three-month residency in Apia, from August to October 2019, supports a mid-career or established New Zealand artist to work on an arts project and to develop their skills and practice.
Last year’s Samoa Artist in Residence Ioane Ioane used his residency to research how to construct and then begin building a ten-metre va'aaolo (Pacific vaka).
“The residency was a chance to reconnect with my roots through living and working in my ancestral island. My goal is to promote the ancient craft of va'aaolo,” he said after being awarded the residency last year.
Applicants must be a New Zealand artist of Pacific Island heritage, a resident in Aotearoa and have a strong track record in their art form. The full list of requirements is available on the Creative New Zealand website
Previous recipients have included Ioane Ioane, Lemi Ponifasio, Tiffany Singh, Yuki Kihara, Fiona Collins, Nathaniel Lees and Evotia Tamua.
Applications close 29 March 2019.
