The Ministry of Culture and Heritage wants to improve access to events for the disabled and is considering the introduction of a companion card scheme to help achieve this in New Zealand.
A similar scheme in Australia gives those with a permanent disability and who require support from a carer at events, free access to paid entry activities such as public pools, art galleries, and tourist attractions. Providers participating in the scheme bear the cost of entry for the carer of the person.
The Ministry has commissioned a survey to find out how many event operators currently offer free tickets to the disabled and to help it assess whether New Zealand could introduce a similar scheme.
Arts organisations, including Creative New Zealand investment clients, offering paid entry activities are encouraged to take part in the anonymous, ten minute survey conducted by Research First.
