Pasifika artists to chart future

Pacific artists from throughout New Zealand will gather in Wellington to help shape their future at the Creative New Zealand Pacific Arts Summit 2018.

Contemporary and heritage artists working in visual arts, craft, performing arts, literature, film, television, and music will gather to share their skills, experiences and views on how to best support and develop their practice.

“Having such a broad range of Pacific artists in one place is an opportunity for the sector to build on its success over the last decade and plan for the future,” said Arts Council member Luamanuvao Winnie Laban.

Held at Te Papa on 15-16 March, the summit will help Creative New Zealand improve its understanding of the current historical context of Pacific peoples, artists and audiences in New Zealand and in the wider Pacific region.

It will also help inform development of the New Zealand Arts Council’s five-year Pacific arts strategy which is being developed this year with the sector.

There will also be excellent career development, networking and relationship building opportunities for established, mid-career and emerging Pacific artists.

Luamanuvao Winnie Laban said by bringing some artists together for the first time and helping others to re-connect, the summit would enable opportunities for greater collaboration, and support the long-term development of Pacific art.

“The last summit was in 2010 and I’m sure many of those attending are as excited as I am about helping to shape the future of Pacific art,” she said.

The summit will include talanoa, panels and talks on:

  • the past, present and future of Pacific arts
  • how future Pasifika artists can succeed
  • the impact of technology and the internet on Pacific arts practices
  • roots and identity
  • innovation and entrepreneurship.

Creative New Zealand acknowledges the support of its partners the New Zealand Film Commission, Te Papa, Massey University College of Creative Arts, and Pacific Business Trust. There is no cost for Pasifika artists to attend the summit. The number of participants is limited to 150 due to space and logistics constraints.
