Creative New Zealand has launched a new online tool as a best practice guide for community arts projects in Aotearoa New Zealand: Keteparaha Mō Ngā Toi Hapori, or the Community Arts Toolkit.
The Community Arts Toolkit, aimed at people who lead or are interested in leading community arts projects, draws together best practice from Aotearoa and other parts of the world.
Community arts are created by, with, and for a community – with the community actively involved in creating the art. Artists and practitioners who work with communities from around the country have contributed to the toolkit, sharing their knowledge and experiences in several videos, which are a key feature. There are also tip sheets, templates and examples of successful projects and events.
“We are extremely grateful to those who have so generously shared their time and wisdom to help bring the Community Arts Toolkit to life,” says Cath Cardiff, Senior Manager Arts Development Services.
“The arts matter for strong and prosperous communities. We hope this toolkit will be a useful resource to those working with communities, bringing together a variety of information, tools and resources in one place.”
The toolkit has the following sections:
- What are community arts?: arts practitioners from around Aotearoa share what ‘community arts’ mean to them.
- Projects to inspire: some inspiring examples of successful projects from around Aotearoa and the world – including video case studies.
- What makes a strong community arts project: common characteristics of successful community arts projects to consider when planning and executing projects.
- Tools to develop your project: a collection of tools and resources for working with communities, from Aotearoa and around the world.
- Find funding and resources: outlines various sources to explore when seeking resources for community arts projects.
- Growing community arts: a list of organisations in Aotearoa and overseas working in the community arts space – a starting point at connecting the wide range of experienced community arts practitioners and organisations.
