Mourning the loss of John McIntyre

Creative New Zealand joins the literary community in mourning the loss of one of New Zealand’s best-known booksellers and advocates for children’s books, John McIntyre.

The co-owner of The Children’s Bookshop, in Kilbirnie, Wellington, died after ‘a brave fight with chronic illness’, according to a message on the shop’s website.

A former primary school teacher, MacIntyre opened the business in 1992. He was a strong advocate for children’s books and the importance of reading. McIntyre’s contributions to the literature sector included services as a past judge of the NZ Post Children’s Book Awards and as a convener of judges in 1999. He was a regular reviewer of children’s books on Radio New Zealand between 2003 and 2017.
