E te roimata e taheke i runga, kōmaru ana ngā roimata. He wairua pō kia tangi au. He puna anō rā te utuhia i te roa ko te tau. Ko to aroha rā, ko to tinana te whakarehunga iho. Haere atu rā te uri o Hikurangi maunga. Ko koe rā tēnei e Api kua tiraha nei. Kua rere noa atu tō wairua ki te tipuna kuia ki a Hine nui te po, ki a rātau mā e tatari mai rā mōu. E kore a muri e hokia. Nō reira koutou te hunga kua okioki, koutou te hunga kua wahangū, koutou te hunga kua wheturangitia haere ki te au te rena, te urunga te taka, te moenga te whakaarahia.
Creative New Zealand mourns the loss of the great Dr Apirana Tuahae Kaukapakapa Mahuika (Ngāti Porou).
In 2014 Dr Mahuika was awarded the Te Waka Toi Award Te Tohu Aroha mō Ngoingoi Kumeroa Pewhairangi for his services to strengthening the Māori language.
Dr Manuika’s passion for the promotion and protection of Ngāti Porou Taonga and Te Reo ake o Ngāti Porou was unrelenting. Among numerous other contributions and achievements, he was one of the founding lecturers in Te Reo Māori at Victoria University (along with his whanaunga Dr Te Kapunga Dewes) as well as the founding lecturer in Te Reo Māori at Massey University.
He will be sorely missed.
