On 12 August, chamber ensemble Stroma celebrates its tenth birthday. To celebrate, they will be performing a celebratory concert at the Ilott Concert Chamber featuring three New Zealand works and two international works showcasing the best of Stromas abilities.
Works by New Zealand composers Jeroen Speak, Alexandra Hay and Peter Scholes range from the melodic lyricism of Scholes work to the intriguing sonic subtleties of Speaks and Hays works. Alongside these new works is Greek composer Iannis Xenakiss raucous Thalleïn and British wunderkind Thomas Adèss Living Toys.
Australian clarinet virtuoso Richard Haynes will feature as guest soloist in the Speak, while NZSO sub principal trumpet Mark Carter tackles an infamous "speaking trumpet" solo in the Adès work.
"The group will be celebrating in style," says artistic co-director Michael Norris. "This concert will showcase the diverse musical worlds that Stroma has uncovered in the last ten years: from the melodic and lilting, to the subtle and intriguing, to the brash and confronting. New works from New Zealand composers will be placed alongside landmarks of the international repertoire. Please join us to celebrate our first decade and welcome in our impending teens!"
Stroma is one of New Zealand’s finest contemporary chamber ensembles, comprising players from the NZSO and other freelance Wellington performers. Since its inaugural concert in 2000, they has performed regularly, with a repertoire of fresh, cutting-edge compositions. They have appeared at numerous New Zealand International Arts Festivals, and toured for Chamber Music New Zealand in 2004.
Critics have hailed Stroma as "one of the most interesting and original ensembles to have emerged recently", describing its performances as "vibrant and exhilarating", "stunning" and "staggeringly fine".
