Creative New Zealand mourns the passing of Peter McLeavey, widely regarded as New Zealand's most influential art dealer.
Mr McLeavey set up his first gallery in Wellington in the 1960s. He supported, encouraged and promoted the work of many of what are now considered New Zealand's most influential artists including Colin McCahon, Toss Woollaston, Michael Smither, Gordon Walters and Michael Illingworth.
He was also a tireless advocate of contemporary New Zealand art which, at that time, was not widely appreciated or accepted by the New Zealand public.
