Academic and historian Judith Binney and artist and curator Helen Kedgley have been appointed to the board of the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa, Minister for Arts Culture and Heritage Christopher Finlayson announced today.
The Arts Council is responsible for overall policy development for Creative New Zealand, which operates at arms length from government in encouraging, promoting and supporting the arts in New Zealand.
Professor Judith Binney, CNZM, FRSNZ is the recipient of many academic awards, fellowships and prizes, has published extensively, and was the editor of the New Zealand Journal of History from 1996 to 2001. She is Emeritus Professor of the University of Auckland. She has been a Guardian of Alexander Turnbull Library , a member of the Waitangi Tribunal since 2003, sat on the Te Papa Board from 1999 to 2006, and has been a member of the New Zealand Historic Places Board since 2007. Her academic skills and bicultural experience will add considerable value to the Council.
Helen Kedgley is a New Zealand painter and curator of Contemporary Art. After graduating in Fine Arts from Auckland University and then the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris she worked for the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. On her return to New Zealand she worked for the New Zealand International Arts Festival as the Artist Liaison co ordinator before being appointed as the curator of Contemporary Art at Pataka Museum of Arts and Cultures in Porirua City.
The new members three year terms begin on 1 November 2009.
