Creative New Zealand has increased the funds available to support artists and arts organisations affected by the Christchurch earthquake by $1.25 million.
The increase is in addition to $750,000 already committed to provide support through Creative New Zealand’s Earthquake Emergency Response Fund after the September 2010 earthquake. Creative New Zealand is making $1 million available in the 2010/2011 financial year and a further $1 million in 2011/2012.
The increase was announced at a Creative New Zealand-hosted networking function for Christchurch arts community, which also resulted in the establishment of a steering group to help coordinate and advocate for the recovery of the arts in Christchurch.
“In the current challenging environment where much of the arts infrastructure, such as spaces to create and perform, is not available it’s important that the arts community through collaboration and innovation are able to begin to recover as soon as possible,” said Arts Council Chair Alastair Carruthers.
‘‘The power of the arts to entertain, inspire and to enhance a sense of well-being is essential to the people of Christchurch in these incredibly difficult times.”
Applicants can apply for a grant from the Earthquake Emergency Response Fund if their organisation or project has been adversely affected as a direct result of the Canterbury earthquakes of 4 September 2010 or 22 February 2011. Information about eligibility criteria can be found on the Creative New Zealand website.
In March, Creative New Zealand also provided grants in advance totaling $506,403 to four Christchurch-based arts organisations, Arts on Tour, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, The Court Theatre and The Physics Room.
The four organisations are all recurrently funded organisations (RFOs) and received grants covering the period from April to June this year in one lump sum.
