Creative New Zealand is once again offering a residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Germany in 2010/11. The residency is for a period of up to twelve months and is open to all New Zealand visual artists currently working or exhibiting in New Zealand.
The closing date for applications is 5.00pm Friday 6 November 2009.
Background
The Creative New Zealand Visual Arts Residency in Berlin was established by the Arts Board in 1999/2000, to provide a unique opportunity for a New Zealand visual artist. It is a biennial residency and was offered previously in 2002/03, 2004/05, 2006/07 and 2008/09.
The timeframe covered by the residency currently being offered is August 2010 – July 2011.
Previous recipients have been: Peter Robinson; Michael Stevenson; Ronnie van Hout; Mladen Bizumic and Sara Hughes.
Aims
The primary aim will be for the artist to work on an approved project while in Berlin. However, transporting the artist to a different environment is expected to have many other benefits. These include:
- Opportunities for a new physical environment to impact upon the artist’s work
- Cross fertilisation of ideas from mixing with residents of other cultures
- Increased awareness in Germany of New Zealand artists and New Zealand visual arts
- Professional Development opportunities e.g. invitations to exhibit elsewhere
- Contribution to the development of New Zealand visual arts.
Künstlerhaus Bethanien
The Künstlerhaus Bethanien is a major artists’ residency and project workshop for the promotion of contemporary art and international exchange. The Künstlerhaus Bethanien was established in 1975 and is now a leading model for similar institutions internationally. Over the years, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien has worked on and presented hundreds of projects. A considerable number of artists who have gone through the programme there are now established figures in the international scene.
The Kunstlerhaus Bethanien are currently in the process of relocating to a new building. The studios have free, 24 hour internet connection. They are equipped with a telephone line, the use of which is billed to the artist. This applies also for the use of fax and copy facilities situated in the office.
Access is provided to a Video/DVD-cutting-studio as well as to workshops (wood, metal, plastic, airbrush). Additional computers, scanners and a printer are for free use for the artists. The building will also have a lounge where the artists can meet 24 hours.
The Künstlerhaus Bethanien will offer the resident a studio and an exhibition at the end of their term and their exhibition and work will be covered in BE magazine.

Creative New Zealand Support
Creative New Zealand will offer the resident a stipend of $40,000 for a twelve-month residency, commencing August 2010, to be used towards living and material costs plus travel and insurance.
In addition a one bedroom flat in Berlin is provided for the selected artist’s accommodation for the duration of the residency.
Creative New Zealand will also cover the Künstlerhaus Bethanien studio expenses which include a contribution towards the costs of an exhibition and its promotion and publication.
Expenses not covered by Creative New Zealand and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien are the responsibility of the artist selected for the residency.
Criteria And Eligibility
Applications will be assessed in the following areas:
- The artists record of achievement as a professional practising artist.
- The project (or projects) proposed and the artistic rationale for wanting to be in Berlin.
- The artists understanding of the culture and environment of the Künstlerhaus Bethanien and Berlin and their ability to present well to overseas contacts and engage in the ambassadorial aspects of the residency.
- How well the artist can deliver to Creative New Zealand’s goals for this residency that ‘the skills and capabilities of high-potential artists are developed’ and ‘the development of high-quality, innovative and culturaly diverse New Zealand work is supported’.

Selection Process
Creative New Zealand peer assessors will undertake pre-assessment of the applications. A shortlist of applicants is then sent to Berlin, Germany and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien makes the final selection of resident.
Evaluation
On completion of the residency, the selected artist will provide a detailed report that gives an account of project completion and of all the professional activities in which the artist has engaged while in Berlin. The report is an important resource for Creative New Zealand, helping to build a picture of what is being achieved over time through similar initiatives. With this in mind, the artist will be expected to report to the required format (Word 90kb).
Making An Application
It is not necessary to use the standard Creative New Zealand application form. However, you should make clear in your cover letter that you are applying for the Künstlerhaus Bethanien Residency and include your contact details including email and phone numbers.
Your application should include the following:
- A description of the project (or projects) you want to complete during the residency.
- Details on how you believe the residency will further develop your skills and networks (you may wish to expand on your career path to date).
- Reference to the aims of the residency beyond your proposed project.
- Given the ambassadorial aspects of the residency, please provide evidence of your experience in delivering floortalks and/or participation in seminars and panels.
- Resume/CV listing exhibition and professional history.
- Letters of recommendation (up to three).
Support Material
Creative New Zealand does not return support material. Applicants, therefore, should not include original material. The Künstlerhaus Bethanien may want to archive support material.
- Copies of visual material (not originals). Make sure that images are clearly numbered and marked with name, title of work and an arrow indicating correct way to view them, accompanied by a list giving date of work, medium and dimension (three separate sets please).
- Exhibition catalogues and/or CD ROMs and videos where appropriate (keep in mind that any material of this kind sent in should be capable of being read on a European system if your application is shortlisted and sent to Berlin.
Number Of Copies
Because of our assessment process, we need Two copies of your application and Three sets of any support material. Your application could be disadvantaged if you do not send the correct number of copies.
Closing Date
The closing date for applications is 5.00pm Friday 6 November 2009.

Late Applications Not Accepted
Please note that incomplete, late, emailed or faxed applications, including support material, will not be accepted. If your application arrives at Creative New Zealand's Wellington office after the relevant 5:00pm closing date it will not be eligible for consideration. If you are applying from outside New Zealand, it is your responsibility to send the application in time to arrive before the deadline.
