It is with sadness that Creative New Zealand acknowledges the passing of Sir James McNeish on 14 November.
A recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in 2010, Sir James McNeish was a novelist, playwright and biographer, author of some 25 books.
Sir James was a recipient of the Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship in 1973, a National Library of New Zealand Research Fellow in 1999 and was awarded Creative New Zealand’s Berlin Writers' Residency in 2009.
His book, Lovelock, was nominated for the 1986 Booker Prize.
In the 2011 New Year Honours he was appointed as Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to literature.
Sir James lived in Wellington, New Zealand, with his wife Helen, Lady McNeish.
He died aged 85, several days after submitting his final manuscript, Breaking Ranks, to HarperCollins for publication in April 2017.
