Creative New Zealand acknowledges the passing of photographer Marti Friedlander on 14 November.
Marti Friedlander, CNZM was acclaimed for her work documenting life, politics and art in New Zealand over five decades of rapid social change. Documenting New Zealand’s leading artists was a life-long project and she was responsible for some of the most iconic images of artists such as Rita Angus, Ralph Hotere and Tony Fomison. Her collaboration with historian Michael King in 1972 on his book, Moko – Māori Tattooing in the 20th Century, brought her work to a wider audience and established her as a household name in New Zealand. In 2010 she gifted her suite of portraits from the Moko project to Te Papa Tongarewa.
Friedlander was admitted as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1999 and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Literature by the University of Auckland in 2016.
Supported by the Arts Foundation, the Marti Friedlander Photographic Award was launched in 2007.
