Applications for Creative New Zealand’s two multi-year investment programmes for artists and arts organisations are due by the end of this week (31 May 2013).
The two investment programmes, Toi Uru Kahikatea (Arts Development) and Toi Tōtara Haemata (Arts Leadership), offer funding from one to five years for a diverse range of arts organisations and activities.
Eighty arts organisations throughout New Zealand are currently funded through the programmes ranging from New Zealand Opera, which is funded for a three year programme of work, to the India Ink Theatre Company, which receives support for specific projects in 2013.
The two investment programmes came into effect in 2011 and account for almost 60 percent of Creative New Zealand’s funding for the arts each year. In the 2012 financial year, Creative New Zealand spent $22.6 million on these programmes out of a total arts funding budget of $38.6 million.
“Funding through the investment programmes is contestable. In each funding round we consider applications from those applying to the programmes for the first time as well as applications from existing investment clients. This process helps us to remain responsive to the changing needs and expectations of New Zealanders and the arts sector,” says Creative New Zealand Chief Executive Stephen Wainwright.
“The arts sector is dynamic and we need to be sure we continue to fund the best organisations to deliver results for New Zealand arts. All organisations in our investment programmes need to have a strong record of artistic excellence and delivery.”
Creative New Zealand is requesting proposals for support under the Toi Tōtara Haemata programme for five key roles in theatre and Māori arts (Ngā Toi Māori).
Toi Tōtara Haemata provides between two and five years financial support to well-run, financially sound organisations to fulfil a key role or roles in the creation and presentation of high quality art experiences to New Zealanders. Key roles are identified by Creative New Zealand and requests for proposals are put out as required.
Toi Uru Kahikatea is offered once a year and complements Toi Tōtara Haemata by providing greater flexibility in the range of activities it supports. Funding is available for periods of one to three years for organisations, groups or individuals.
