Flight of the Kiwis – ready for take off at the Edinburgh Festivals

Numerous New Zealand shows and artists will be part of the Edinburgh festivals this summer.

The critically acclaimed, long established Edinburgh Festivals are the largest in the world attracting huge international audiences, producers and buyers. In 2014 the NZ at Edinburgh season showcased over 200 artists and performers across seven different festivals.

If you’re in Edinburgh for the festival here’s a guide to who’s where and how to book:

Edinburgh International Book Festival

Two New Zealand writers received funding through the Creative New Zealand Travel fund administered by the Book Council.

Anna Smail, selected for the Man Booker Prize longlist for her debut novel The Chimes, appears in Electricity, Music and Memory.

Peter Millet talks about his new action-packed spy series for 7-10 year olds in Johnny Danger DIY Spy: Licenced to Thrill.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe

The Okareka Dance Company takes its show K’Rd Strip: A Place to Stand to the Festival Fringe. Okareka received funding towards this Edinburgh season through Creative New Zealand’s Toi Uru Kahikatea investment programme. 

Trick of the Light presents The Book Binder. This was funded through the International Presentation Fund as a result of Creative New Zealand’s Te Manu Ka Tau programme in March.  

John Rae and The Troubles received funding through Creative New Zealand’s International Presentation Fund after successfully performing as part of the NZ at Edinburgh season in 2014. For 2015 they joined the Leo Blanco Trio for a show at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and played several shows at the Assembly Rooms for the Festival Fringe in July. They perform three more Fringe shows in August.

Trygve Wakenshaw performs KRAKEN, at the Festival Fringe

Guy Montgomery and Rose Mateo present their comedy show Rose Matafeo and Guy Montgomery Are Friends at the Free Fringe.

  • Laughing Horse@Espionage 6-30 August 4.30 pm  

Penny Ashton takes Promise and Promiscuity: A New Musical by Jane Austen and Penny Ashton to the Festival Fringe.

  • Assembly George Square Studios 8-31 August 2.20 pm Book tickets

Jon Coddington, with cast members Anya Tate-Manning and James Nokise present Puppet Fiction at the Free Fringe.

  • Laughing Horse@The Counting House 6-30 August 2.25 pm      

Barnie Duncan performs Calypso Nights, Juan Two.

Rachel Dawick presents Boundary Riders: NZ Pioneer Women .

Momentum

The international delegate programme Momentum takes place in Edinburgh each August and is delivered through a partnership between British Council Scotland, Festivals Edinburgh and Creative Scotland. The programme provides a dynamic platform for key cultural players to engage and build relationships with organisations and individuals in Edinburgh, the world’s leading festival city.

Adrianne Roberts from Show Pony, Gabrielle Vincent from Basement Theatre, Kitan Petkovski from Bullet Heart Club, Lydia Zanetti from the Auckland Fringe, Robin Kerr from The Playground Collective and Victor Rodger all received Creative New Zealand funding towards travel to participate in Momentum in 2015, as did Stuart Grant from Capital E who attended the Imaginate Festival delegate programme earlier this year.
