The elegance of the Viennese waltz is at the heart of a special Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra concert in July.
The concert, Qantas presents A Night in Vienna is at the Auckland Town Hall on Thursday 1 July.
Wintertime in Vienna is often celebrated with traditional concerts of waltzes and polkas and the APO brings a taste of Viennese elegance and fun to warm up Auckland’s winter.
Conducted by maestro Radoslaw Szulc, the concert features Johann Strauss waltzes, polkas and marches composed for Vienna’s high society and including favourites Tales from the Vienna Woods and the Pizzicato Polka.
Dancing with the Stars favourites, Nerida Cortese and Aaron Gilmore will perform two dazzling waltzes to Wine, Woman and Song and the popular On the Beautiful Blue Danube while Australian soprano Natalie Jones will accompany the orchestra in pieces from Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow.
APO chief executive Barbara Glaser says the orchestra enjoys performing these much-loved works which have so much history.“Strauss’ music is not just entertaining; it’s truly great music which evokes a world of grace, style and elegance.”
