The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) is calling for submissions on how Class 4 gambling (pokies) can be improved to increase support for community projects without driving a growth in gambling.
Creative New Zealand is preparing its own submission for the Review of Class 4 Gambling and has prepared a fact sheet for arts organisations or individuals who want to make a submission on the issue.
Class 4 gambling relates to gambling machines outside casinos, commonly referred to as pokies. Pokie machines are operated by not-for-profit clubs and gaming societies, which pay pubs and other venues to host the machines.
Over the past decade more than $2.5 billion has been made available to community projects from the proceeds of class 4 gambling, of which 4% is allocated to arts and culture projects.
Submissions close on Friday 12 August.
The Review of Class 4 Gambling Quick Fact Sheet (pdf 122KB) on the Creative New Zealand website provides background on the issue for organisations interested in making a submission.
