Anthony McCall is the 2014 International Artist in Residence visiting the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth.
During his residency in New Plymouth, January 10-16, experimental film-maker Anthony McCall will be working alongside Len Lye Curator Paul Brobbel researching in the Len Lye Archive. The artist will be looking at the possibility of future projection works for an exhibition in the new Govett-Brewster/Len Lye Centre, 2017.
Occupying a space between sculpture, cinema and drawing, McCall’s constantly mutating sculptural installations give viewers a participatory role – their bodies, moving around and through the forms, intersect with and modify the planes of light as they slowly unfold, expand and contract.
The Govett-Brewster is collaborating with the Trish Clark Gallery, Auckland, where McCall will exhibit Face to Face, a double solid light projection opening 27 January until 25 March.
McCall is a British-born American-based avant-garde artist specialising in cinema/projected film. He has lived and worked in New York since 1973.
McCall will give a public talk about his practice at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki on 25 January in conjunction with his inclusion in its current exhibition Light Show. He will also be meeting with staff of Wellington City Gallery, GOMA Brisbane, MONA Hobart, Art Gallery NSW and the MCA in Sydney through January, as the Govett-Brewster International Artist in Residence.
McCall’s work is represented in numerous collections, including, amongst others, Tate, London, England; Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany; Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Spain; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, USA; SFMoMA, San Francisco, USA; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; and Hirshhorn, Washington, DC, USA.

About Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre
The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, established in 1970, is Aotearoa New Zealand’s first and only contemporary art museum. Since 1980 the gallery has been home to the Collection and Archive of pioneering New Zealand filmmaker and kinetic artist Len Lye (1901-1980). The Len Lye Centre is currently under construction adjacent to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and is due to open mid-2015 as a combined art museum.
