Residency details
Successful candidates will live and work in Asia for two to three months at a prestigious residency organisation. During this time you will have the opportunity to meet and work with international artists and curators.
There are five residencies available:
- Shalini Ganendra Vision Culture Art Residency, Malaysia
- 1.Shanthiroad, Bangalore, India
- Goyang Art Studio, Seoul, Korea
- NS43 exchange, S-AiR Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan
- Taipei Artist Village, Taiwan
You may apply for more than one residency.

What’s covered by the residencies?
Asia New Zealand Foundation will provide:
- a return economy airfare between New Zealand and Asia
- a daily stipend for food, transport and incidentals
- NZ$500 towards the cost of materials
- the cost of a single-entry tourist visa where required
- NZ$300 towards travel insurance.
Eligibility
- You should be an emerging or mid-career artist with a record of achievement.
- You must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, and able to exercise a degree of autonomy and self-reliance.
Preference will be given to projects that have potential for artistic collaboration and exhibition outcomes.
Selection criteria
An independent panel appointed by Asia:NZ will shortlist candidates, from which the residency host will make a choice.
Selection will be based on several factors, including your:
- record of achievement – artists must have had at least one group show and one solo show
- specific artistic rationale for wishing to be resident in Asia
- proposed residency project and its quality and significance. This may include research, meeting with identified artistic/cultural influences, creating a new body of work and/or artistic collaborations
- ability to develop networks and work collaboratively
- understanding of the aims of the Asia New Zealand Foundation.
