The Michael King Writers’ Centre is calling for applications for an eight-week residency especially for a Maori writer at the Michael King Writers’ Centre in Devonport in 2011.
The aim of the centre’s residency programme is to support writers and to promote New Zealand literature by providing an opportunity for authors to work full-time on a major project.
This eight-week residency is especially for an established or emerging Maori author. It will run from Thursday 12 May to Friday 8 July 2011, and a stipend of $8,000 would be paid.
The deadline for applications will be Friday 17 December 2010.
The successful writer will be able to use a bedroom at the Michael King Writers’ Centre and work in the writer’s studio. Payment of the stipend will be by arrangement with the Michael King Writers’ Centre, and will usually be subject to tax.
Eligibility
This opportunity is for an established or emerging Maori author, working on a project in fiction, non-fiction, drama or poetry. Applicants should be writers of proven merit and usually resident in New Zealand or hold New Zealand citizenship.
The following persons are not eligible for selection:
- Tertiary students working towards the completion of a tertiary qualification;
- Academics or employees of a tertiary institution whose project is part of their usual employment;
- Writers working on scripts for film, television or radio;
- Anyone who has an overdue project completion report for a project funded by an arts funding agency
- Employees of Creative New Zealand or members of its council and committees;
- Trustees and staff of the Michael King Writers’ Centre.
The selection panel will consist of two representatives from the Michael King Writers’ Centre and two independent people. The decision of the selection panel will be final and the panel will not engage in correspondence or discussion about the decision.

All applications will be acknowledged by email or post. If you do not receive acknowledgement within a week, please check that your application has arrived.
No late applications will be accepted. The selection panel expects to make the selection before the end of January and announce it in early February 2011.
