New music centre for Christchurch welcomed by Creative New Zealand

Creative New Zealand Chief Executive Stephen Wainwright welcomed today’s announcement that a new Music Centre will soon be under construction as the first step towards developing a Performing Arts Precinct in central Christchurch.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee has announced the new $12.5 million Music Centre is a significant step towards establishing the Performing Arts Precinct alongside the refurbished Isaac Theatre Royal.

“We are delighted with this positive and collaborative development.  The Performing Arts Precinct is a cornerstone of the central city’s blueprint for development. It will bring a renewed cultural life and heart to the central city,” Mr Wainwright said.

“We know that Christchurch people value the arts more than ever. They are attending cultural events to feel part of their community as well as meeting their need to be entertained, distracted and uplifted.

“Creative New Zealand has been proud to support the many extraordinary Christchurch artists, arts organisations and their dedicated workers and supporters who have kept the arts alive in the city over the last three years.  Their work has been vital in helping the people of Christchurch to rebuild their lives and their communities,” he said.

“Today’s announcement is a great step towards creating a vibrant cultural hub that will be a huge asset for city and directly contribute to the health and well-being of Christchurch and its people.”
