Between June 2013 to June 2022, Toi Tipu Toi Rea funding was awarded to emerging Māori artists who successfully applied to other Creative New Zealand opportunities - Quick Response and Arts Grants.
Previous recipients of Toi Tipu Toi Rea funding include:

- Tanumafili Aumua - $7,450 to create a new body of work with a focus on te reo Maori
- Te Kanawa Ngarotata - $3,195 to attend and participate at the world culture tattoo Festival held in Mallorca, Spain 2018.
- Nui Hunuki - $7,495 towards the research and draft development of a transmedia project based on the oral histories of Polynesian voyaging
- Awhina Pitiro - $7,428 towards the research and draft development of a transmedia project based on the oral histories of Polynesian voyaging
