The 2022 Boosted X Moana campaign ended last month – raising a total of $162,170 across twenty Pasifika creative projects. Creative New Zealand match-funded each donation through our Pacific Arts Strategy 2018-2023.

Boosted X Moana is an initiative co-designed by Creative New Zealand and Boosted – run by the Arts Foundation – to help diversify sources of revenue in the digital space for Pasifika artists, build a resilient Pacific arts sector, and generate and nurture relationships between Pacific arts and the wider community.

Now in its third year, Boosted X Moana was bigger and more ambitious in 2022.

There were five more projects included than the previous year, and some of the projects’ financial targets were increased. This year, the average success rate was 109%.

Creative New Zealand’s Chief Executive, Stephen Wainwright, is thrilled to see Boosted X Moana’s continued success.

“In our changing arts-funding landscape, we need innovative pathways to support our creative communities,” says Stephen.

“Supporting projects that allow artists to learn new skills in campaigning and crowdfunding to diversify their funding avenues is in line with our strategic priorities of resilience, access and equity. By harnessing community support, we can build a resilient creative sector, together.”

“A ground-breaking, co-designed project like Boosted X Moana is a step towards the transformative future we’re striving for to make every dollar of public money go further. On behalf of Creative New Zealand, I want to thank every single one of the thousands of generous New Zealanders who personally contributed to our Boosted X Moana campaigns, and the Arts Foundation for supporting the amazing Boosted platform. ”

Jessica Palalagi, General Manager of the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi, says since launch in 2020, Boosted X Moana has been building year-on-year.

“Through this project, The Arts Foundation, Boosted, and Creative New Zealand have been facilitating an ecosystem of Pasifika creatives that are strongly contributing to the cultural fabric of Aotearoa. Throughout all elements of the campaign, we engage Pasifika creatives, so we’re collaborating with the community through the entire process – and to date, we’ve raised over $467,000,” says Jessica.

“In essence, this project is co-funding alongside the communities these artists belong to – and that’s the future. In order to really change the arts-funding environment for future generations of Pasifika creatives, it’s important to innovate and continue to diversify how funding is obtained.”

“The Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi and Boosted are excited to continue to grow our partnership with Creative New Zealand through Boosted X Moana – big things coming in 2023!”

Kawika Aipa – Creative New Zealand’s Manager, Pacific Arts – is thrilled to see this partnership with the Arts Foundation and Boosted go from strength to strength.

“By match-funding community donations, not only are we doubling every investment, we’re able to share this kaupapa with a huge number of people,” says Kawika.

“Ground-breaking collaborations like this align with the pou of the Pacific Arts Strategy 2018-2023 – and the subsequent projects like Boosted X Moana prove the power of community support.”

“When we talk about a creative eco-system, that’s what we mean. A reciprocal, living connection – to each other, to our ancestors, to future generations. This holistic approach to funding creative work is exciting, and I look forward to seeing how we can build on this success in 2023.”
