The Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi is thrilled to reveal the seven 2022 Arts Foundation Te Tumi Toi Laureate Award recipients, identified as Aotearoa New Zealand’s most outstanding artists for 2022. They are recognised for their outstanding practice as well as their significant impact. This year also marks the inaugural year of the The Toi Kō Iriiri Queer Laureate Award – the first of its kind in Aotearoa.
2022 marks the 22nd year of the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureate Awards, established to celebrate and empower New Zealand’s most outstanding practising artists across a diverse range of disciplines. Every year the Arts Foundation recognises exceptional artists with a financial gift (this year totalling $30,000) and shares their story with New Zealand. The awards are entirely funded by generous arts lovers from across Aotearoa.
This year the seven new artists will join an alumni of 113 Laureates already celebrated and empowered for being outstanding in their field, and for having the potential for an enduring career and lasting impact on Aotearoa New Zealand. Past Laureates include Shane Cotton, Eleanor Catton, Whirimako Black, Don McGlashan, Taika Waititi, Lisa Reihana Bill Manhire and FAFSWAG – to name a few! Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Kaiwhakahaere / General Manager, Jessica Palalagi says, “our seven 2022 Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureates reflect the strength of creativity in Aotearoa right now. They are individually outstanding, and collectively a force – and we are so proud to welcome them into our remarkable alumni of Aotearoa New Zealand artists.”
The seven Laureates are chosen following a rigorous selection process by an independent panel of experts during June 2022.

Background
The Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureate Awards are for practicing New Zealand artists, working anywhere in the world, with significant achievements – and the potential to continue as high achieving artists – who are:
- Committed to a career in the arts
- Outstanding artists in their field
- A great New Zealand artist
- Important to their communities and to New Zealand
The 2022 Arts Foundation Laureate recipients were selected by an independent panel of seven multidisciplinary artists during June 2022 (note: The Toi Kō Iriiri Queer Laureate was selected separately by a queer panel).
The selection panel included:
- Delaney Davidson – Musician, 2015 Arts Foundation Laureate
- Anne Noble ONZM – Photographer, 2009 Arts Foundation Laureate
- Ane Tonga – Curator of Pacific Art at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki
- Rachel King – Writer, previously programme director of the WORD Christchurch Festival
- Murray Lynch ONZM – Theatre practitioner, Director of Playmarket
- Dolina Wehipeihana – Dancer, Choreographer
- Justine Olsen – Curator of Decorative Art and Design at Te Papa Tongarewa
The Toi Kō Iriiri Queer Laureate Award
The Toi Kō Iriiri Queer Laureate Award is the first of its kind in Aotearoa. It was created to celebrate an outstanding artist – or collective of artists – whose practice has a meaningful impact on queer arts communities. The artist/s will come from a queer community, and their work will be representative of their community and contribute to social change.
This award is made possible thanks to the radical generosity of philanthropist and recently appointed Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Trustee Hall Cannon, who has committed to backing this award for the next 10 years with a $300,000 gift. “I am passionate about the arts and passionate about supporting great causes, and I think in this case – the time has come. With this award we have a really exceptional opportunity to be, frankly, a global leader in this space. And I hope, that in the process we can show that while we’re a small country, we can be very mighty with our voice.”
The name of the award – Toi Kō Iriiri – has been gifted by Dr Elizabeth Kerekere, Activist, Artist, Green Party MP Her interpretation of this name references “art that transforms – that moves us in or out of discomfort, but always to a new place.”
The 2022 Toi Kō Iriiri Queer Laureate Award had its own selection panel, and that panel included:

The Laureates are possible thanks to a generous whānau of funders whose contribution enables six awards – some annually, some every second year. Dedicated Laureates:
