Creative New Zealand has conducted a survey looking at the remuneration of artists and arts practitioners working as contractors and employees in Aotearoa’s arts sector.

The Arts Sector Summary Remuneration Report 2021 was produced in conjunction with Strategic Pay and provides a brief overview of remuneration/pay packages, employment policies and practices for artists, arts practitioners and administrators working as employees and contractors in Aotearoa New Zealand’s arts sector. 

Key Findings

The Summary report covers the following topics: 

  • Employment Agreements and Trends 
  • Recruitment Trends and Strategy 
  • Work/Life Balance 
  • Health and Safety 
  • Pandemic Business Response. 

In addition, there are examples of pay ranges for a number of artistic roles – musicians, performing artist, visual artist, community artist and technicians.

Research Background

Strategic Pay is a remuneration consultancy Creative New Zealand contracted in 2021 to undertake a survey of remuneration in the arts sector. 

Investment clients and other arts organisations were invited to participate, with a total of just over 300 organisations sent email invitations. 

Fifty-two organisations replied providing information on 576 employee roles and 990 contractor roles.  

The Strategic Pay survey was undertaken to give us better information on current arts sector remuneration as part of our work to develop and implement the Remuneration Policy for Arts and Arts Practitioners Ko te Mahere Utu mā Ngā Kaitoi, Kaiwaihanga Toi.

The costs for the full Arts Sector Remuneration Report 2021, range from $333.33 + GST = $383.33 to 848.40 + GST = $975.66, depending on the size of the organisation.
