Creative New Zealand partners with Playmarket to build skills for Pasifika playwrights

The Creative New Zealand’s Playmarket Pasifika Script Advisor Residency 2021 is a new initiative under the Pacific Arts Strategy 2018 – 2023 to grow script advisor skills to develop powerful Pasifika stories for the stage and performing arts.

“This strategic initiative opens up a whole world of opportunities for Pasifika careers in the film, television and the #DigitalMoana space. Powerful Pasifika stories need powerful scripts and skilled writers who drive whole creative industries that benefit our country,” says Creative New Zealand Chief Executive Stephen Wainwright.

The 14-week programme will include in-depth industry mentoring by Playmarket that will grow the pool of Pasifika script advisors in Aotearoa.

This project aligns with Creative New Zealand’s Pacific Arts Strategy 2018–2023, specifically the ‘Tagata’ leadership opportunities focus and ‘Va’ partnerships outcomes.

“One of the issues in furthering development of new work by Pasifika playwrights is the small number of experienced script advisors who are available to work with the playwrights. This project will go some way to increase the pool of experience available,” says Murray Lynch, Director of Playmarket.

The Pacific arts initiative follows ‘He Pia Māori Kahāpai Tuhinga’, Playmarket’s trainee Māori Script Advisor project and will support the recipient to interact with professional script advisors and directors to develop skills in theatre dramaturgy.

This new residency allows Playmarket to offer this opportunity with a stipend for the creative and allowances for travel with a $25,000 investment from Creative New Zealand.

The residency will also include supporting the development of new work in production at theatre companies, practical involvement in the assessment and selection of scripts, and participation in the subsequent clinics for selected plays.

Playmarket will administer the programme including selecting the Moana Script Advisor. For more information and to apply with a CV and statement of interest, contact director@playmarket.org.nz by 21 June 2021.
