Sector driving contemporary jewellers global reach

Continuing our investment in the contemporary jewellery sector, Creative New Zealand will this year support New Zealand’s presence across three sections of one of the world’s largest and most influential trade fairs. Alongside this, we will continue our partnership with Objectspace to coordinate and drive the sector’s participation and reach at the market.

The National in FRAMES Galleries

Creative New Zealand has supported artists to exhibit at the annual Internationale Handwerksmesse trade fair for Skilled Handicrafts in Munich, Germany since 2009. Over this time the programme has been evolved to best support our artists’ activities each year, and encourage future ambitions.

We will this year support Christchurch –based commercial gallerist The National to participate in the commercial FRAME galleries section of the fair. They will present artists Lisa Walker, Karl Fritsch, Warwick Freeman, Jane Dodd, Moniek Schrijer, Vanessa Arthur, Shelley Norton, Areta Wilkinson, Octavia Cook, Craig McIntosh and Matthew McIntyre Wilson.

We believe this support will increase the experience of New Zealand’s craft/object dealers in international fairs and stimulate international market activity.

Two New Zealand jewellers are among just 60 selected, from a pool of more than 760 global applicants, to exhibit at trade fair highlight Schmuck.

Established in 1959, Schmuck is the oldest contemporary jewellery exhibition in the world and one of the most highly regarded exhibitions and awards on the annual contemporary jewellery calendar. Well-known and renowned makers, as well as emerging artists, from around the world apply directly to Schmuck to exhibit.

This year, Schmuck’s selection included Auckland-based Andrea Daly and Wellington-based Grace Yu Piper. Both have been selected to exhibit at the fair previously, Andrea at Schmuck and Grace as an emerging artist at Talente 2018 (alongside fellow Whitireia Polytechnic graduate Renée Pearson, winner of the prestigious 2018 Talente Prize).

Both jewellers see Schmuck as an opportunity to reconnect with other makers, gallerists, curators, educators, writers, historians from around the world and strengthen their global profiles.

“It is an environment in which to network with established and emerging practitioners, to gain new understandings, to see new developments in the field, all of which establishes a breadth and depth of information against which to reflect on my own work and reflect on New Zealand jewellery, its concerns and developments,” says Andrea.

Creative New Zealand will support the artists with flights and accommodation.

Talente 2019 for Jack Gollop

Wellington-based jeweller Jack Gollop, also a Whitereia graduate, has been selected to exhibit at the fair in the emerging artist scene of Talente 2019.

Talente is a special exhibition and competition within the fair. According to the organisers, those selected have “work that shines through its formal and technical originality and technical perfection, and is ahead of its time”.

Creative New Zealand will provide Jack with support for freighting his work to Talente. He has also received a Quick Response grant from Creative New Zealand towards professional development opportunities in Europe following Talente.

Objectspace continues leading role

In the second year of our partnership with Objectspace, who have taken on the lead role between the fair and the New Zealand craft/object/design sector, we will also support attendance at the fair for Objectspace director Kim Paton, and artist Warwick Freeman.

This initiative supports sector-driven development, with Objectspace leveraging its sector knowledge and expertise to help New Zealand jewellers with global ambitions make the right connections at this influential international trade exhibition.

Objectspace will liaise between the fair and exhibiting New Zealand artists and co-ordinate freighting requirements, as well as helping connect artists with people and opportunities during the fair.
