Visiting Tuvalu artists to showcase skills and knowledge

Four master artists from Tuvalu will share their skills and knowledge with the public at an open day at the Pacifica Arts Centre in Auckland on Saturday 17 November.

The artists are visiting New Zealand from 10-18 November as part of Creative New Zealand’s Pacific Heritage Exchange Programme.

Their week-long visit will focus on the exchange of customary practices and knowledge between the master artists, local artists and community groups.  

The master artists specialise in the following practices:

  • Pualeia Sitaake – master fale (house) builder and weaver
  • Vaelei Vaelei – master canoe builder; maker of kafa (coconut sennit rope) and traditional fishing accessories (cast net, scoop nets, gill nets, and net mending) 
  • Tafitoka Filipi – master skirt maker and weaver
  • Luifou Kokea – master weaver (mats, baskets, fans) and handicraft maker.
