With the worlds leading festival city set to kick off its annual festivals this August, Creative New Zealand is supporting New Zealand artists and practitioners to participate in the Edinburgh Fringe and two international delegate programmes.
This year Kiwis are being supported to participate in the:
Edinburgh Festivals Intensive
The Edinburgh Festivals Intensive is a new initiative supporting four New Zealand performing arts practitioners to take part in a tailored programme of activities to build their international experience and capability.
The 2018 delegates are:
- Anders Falstie-Jensen (The Rebel Alliance)
- Jane Yonge
- Natalie Clark (Foster Group)
- Regan Taylor (Te Rehia Theatre)
Creative New Zealand’s international team will design a programme for each delegate taking account of their arts practice and international strategy. Each programme will include site visits, practical skills-building workshops, contextual seminars and networking events. There will also be opportunities to exchange ideas with international peers so delegates can develop their networks and pursue opportunities to collaborate and present.
Funding towards participants’ international travel and accommodation will also be provided by Creative New Zealand.
Momentum
Auckland Art Gallery’s Curator of Contemporary Art, Natasha Conland, will also be supported to take part in the Edinburgh Festivals’ International Delegates Programme, Momentum.
Natasha was invited to participate by the British Council Scotland, Edinburgh Festivals and Creative Scotland. She will join the visual arts delegation from 26 to 30 July 2018, which is hosted by the Edinburgh Art Festival and British Council Scotland. The programme will include private views, performances and screenings, visits to exhibitions, meetings with curators, museum directors and artists, networking events and studio visits.
Momentum is an invitation-only delegate programme which hosts international delegates to foster partnerships and collaboration with Edinburgh’s Festivals. Delegates also network with the wider Scottish cultural sector with the aim of developing longer-term initiatives between Edinburgh, Scotland and the participating country.

Erewhon
Arthur Meek, co-produced with Magnetic North
Venue: Summerhall
An antique magic lantern projector, an iPhone 6 and a live musical score shine a new light on Samuel Butler’s classic sci-fi novel, Erewhon. A Victorian explorer discovers a colony of refugees; time travellers from the 21st century escaping their dependence on technology. This neo-historical head-scratcher playfully welds future, past and present. The work is a multimedia collaboration between Edinburgh’s Magnetic North, and Kiwi playwright and newly-qualified magic lantern showman Arthur Meek. Featuring an original musical score played live by New Zealand pop powerhouse Eva Prowse.
The Basement Tapes
Zanetti Productions/Stella Reid
Venue: Summerhall
Following her grandmother’s death, a girl faces the overwhelming task of clearing out her grandmother’s basement. She discovers a series of mysterious tape recordings made by her grandmother. As she hears these tapes things start to unravel. Twin Peaks meets Serial in this award-winning New Zealand mystery, which combines the immediacy of physical performance with the imaginative capabilities of audio recording. Squeezed close together among the detritus of a cluttered basement, audience and performer face the secrets and memories that emerge.
Valerie
Venue: Summerhall
‘I’m starting to think about genetics, what’s passed on. What isn’t. I’m thinking of my grandmother, Valerie.’
Named stand-out cabaret of the year by the New Zealand Herald, Valerie is an inter-generational, interdisciplinary and interrupting piece of theatre reaching into the guts of family mythologies. Music, genetics, and storytelling combine to unravel one family’s history. A love letter from grandson to grandmother, this celebration of resilience is gig-theatre at its finest.
Modern Maori Quartet: Two Worlds
Venue: Assembly Festival
Returning to Edinburgh, Modern Maori Quartet’s live shows are parties like no other. With hearty voices in epic harmony, this award-winning contemporary Māori showband shares unique takes on showband hits and pop music, original songs interlaced with distinctive waiata (song) and dance, Māori traditions, aroha (love) and tongue-in-cheek humour, charm and charisma. A celebration of Kiwi music honouring the entertainment legends of Maoridom that is heartwarming and hilarious in equal measure.
Don Juan
Venue: Assembly Festival
Don Juan: the world's greatest lover, the most audacious of men. He does whatever he wants, lives big and loves big. An epic celebration of the boldness of love, Don Juan is an interactive performance party. Experience theatre at its most joyous with outrageous performances, twisted pop songs and brilliant physical comedy.
Not in our Neighbourhood
Venue: Gilded Balloon
Maisey Mata, a filmmaker, is invited by the Women’s Refuge to document their clients in order to raise awareness about domestic violence. There, she encounters Sasha, Cat and Teresa, three individuals living together in The Safehouse, seeking solace and trying to rebuild their lives; all performed by award-winning actor Kali Kopae. Jamie McCaskill’s refreshingly honest play takes a close look behind the mask of domestic violence - the despair, the misguided loyalties, the pain and the hope.
The Moa Show
Venue: Gilded Balloon
Three lonely men are magically transported to a mythical land through the charms of a Maori busker. To get home they must seek the wisdom of the all-seeing Moa and escape the grips of a racist spotted Kiwi and a frustrated thrush.
Salon Mika on Bare Feet Street
Venue: Dance Base
The award-winning Salon Mika experience brings Mika back for his 10th Edinburgh Fringe. This salon of haka-vogue mixed with cabaret naughtiness explodes all over the city and introduces Tribal Pop Dance duo ‘Bare Feet Street’. Mika’s war dance in face paint and heels mashes and struts all over Eidyn.
Background
Creative New Zealand has supported New Zealand artists, practitioners and companies to participate in the Edinburgh Festivals since 2014. Arts organisations have been supported to develop strategies to reach international audiences and use Edinburgh as a platform for onward touring and to develop their international networks.
In 2018 Creative New Zealand will focus on leveraging off the success of previous Edinburgh presentations and building on existing relationships and partnerships. It will also work closely with Fringe companies to build a sustained presentation of work in Edinburgh.
Creative New Zealand also aims to develop partnerships with the Edinburgh International Book Festival and Edinburgh Art Festival to secure presentation opportunities for writers and visual artists in 2019.
