Congratulations Maria Samuela

Recipient of the second University Book Shop and Robert Lord Writers’ Cottage Trust Summer Writer in Residence

content_mariaMaria Samuela writes stories that have a strong Pasifika flavour, meaning a lot of her characters are like her - New Zealand-born Pacific Islanders. Her children's stories have been published in the School Journal, read on RNZ, and translated into five Pacific languages. She's also published a collection of children's stories called The Secret Game Plan and Other Stories. Currently working on her first collection of stories for adults, she hopes to complete it during her MA in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University. Her short story for adults, The Promotion, was read on RNZ in 2015. This story was inspired by her Dad's migration to New Zealand in the 1950s. She's excited about working on the next draft of her collection of adult stories during her residency at the University Book Shop. She's also looking forward to exploring Dunedin, New Zealand's UNESCO City of Literature, for the first time.
