Creative New Zealand is calling for nominations for two new representatives from the Samoan and Tokelauan communities for appointment to its Pacific Arts Committee.

Creative New Zealand is the Governments main organisation for developing the arts. Its role is to promote the arts of New Zealand by supporting artists and encouraging more New Zealanders to participate in the diverse range of arts in this country.

The Pacific Arts Committee supports and celebrates both the heritage arts and contemporary arts of the Pacific peoples of New Zealand. It does this in two ways. Firstly, it allocates grants to a range of projects by Pacific artists and organisations. Secondly, it develops special initiatives such as artform development workshops, information forums and the annual Arts Pasifika Awards.

The Pacific Arts Committee is made up of eight members, including representatives from each of the seven main Pacific Islands nations in New Zealand: Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Niue, Cook Islands, Tokelau and Tuvalu. In addition, there is a chairperson of the Pacific Arts Committee, who is also a member of Creative New Zealands Arts Board.

The Pacific Arts Committee meets up to four times a year. Two of those meetings are project funding meetings in which the Committee considers grant applications from Pacific artists and arts groups.

The ideal candidate should have:
a passion and vision for the development of Pacific arts in New Zealand
an established network among his/her community in New Zealand
support from his/her community, locally or nationally
good communication skills and an ability to work well within a team
proven skills in strategic planning, budget planning and project management
knowledge of the issues facing Pacific artists and groups in their development.

Members of the Pacific Arts Committee are appointed by Creative New Zealand for a three-year term. Members are paid a sitting fee per meeting attended.

The closing date for nominations is 5pm, Thursday 31 March 2005. For a nomination form please contact Joanne Andrews (Tel: 04-498 0740 Email: joannea@creativenz.govt.nz) or click on the link below.
