Producers workshop for Maori Pasific and Asian playwrights

The BANANA BOAT PRODUCERS WORKSHOP are looking for emerging, hungry and motivated Māori, Pasifika and Asian theatre practitioners who want the low down on producing for theatre. The workshop will be run over two Saturdays - 10 and 17 April - in Auckland.
The goal of the BANANA BOAT PRODUCERS WORKSHOP is to teach and equip emerging, hungry and motivated Maori, Pasifika and Asian theatre practitioners about the who, what, how and when of producing for theatre. This workshop is a natural progression from the
Creative Clinics held in early March.
The workshop is being presented by Red Leap Theatre producer Lauren Hughes. Over the two days, Ms Hughes will offer a practical introduction to the process and pitfalls in producing performing arts in New Zealand. It covers matters of governance, budgeting, company management, funding and sponsorship, marketing and publicity, production
management and future planning for the longevity of the work.
The workshop has been made possible with the support of PLAYMARKET, THE EDGE, and CREATIVE NEW ZEALAND.
Workshop presenter Lauren Hughes, says about the upcoming workshop: " Making work without a dedicated producer can be costly… A successful arts venture depends equally on good artistic practice and on good business practice. Workshops such as this promote best
practice and empower participating writers, theatre makers and aspiring producers embarking on new projects."
The Banana Boat is a loose collective of Pasifika and Maori writers who meet once a month.
Started in September 2008 as an initiative of Playmarket, it has gone from strength to strength, from mounting its inaugural Jukebox season last December - three short plays that collectively (and figuratively) brought the house down at Te Karanga Gallery on Karangahape
Road - to the very successful (and booked out) Creative Clinics for writers in early March this year.
