2013 Wellington Zinefest sees a new venue and new ideas

Wellington Zinefest’s seventh annual event will be held this month, featuring a new venue and plenty of new ideas.

content_2013wellingtonzinefestposter_final_lowresDesigned to celebrate and promote zines – small-circulation, self-published works of a multidisciplinary nature - Wellington Zinefest invites zinemakers from across the country and beyond to meet, be inspired and share their work by selling, buying and swapping zines.

This year’s event will be held from 12noon to 5pm on Saturday, 23 November, at the James Cabaret in Wellington’s Mt Victoria. Formerly located at Mighty Mighty, the festival’s new venue will allow for the ever-increasing attendance figures organisers have been seeing year-on-year, and comes thanks to the support of a grant from Creative New Zealand. Hailed as the longest consecutively-run zine festival in New Zealand, Wellington Zinefest hosted 50 stalls and attracted around 800 visitors last year, with more expected in 2013. The festival’s historical connection with Mighty Mighty is continued through the hosting of a Zinefest afterparty at this venue from 9.30pm the same evening, which will feature a number of comedy and musical performances by zinemakers.

“Zinemaking is getting more and more popular,” says Wellington Zinefest Committee Member

Ya-Wen Ho. “It encompasses so many disciplines – from drawing and writing to music, comics, poetry and journalism. The self-published format means there’s no pressure to reach a certain level of output or style – although an event like Wellington Zinefest can really challenge a zinemaker to be more innovative and develop their skills.”

Zinemakers can submit zines into a ‘Best of the Fest’ competition and take part in a collaborative zine-making session during Wellington Zinefest, with a newly formed public programme on offer leading up to the big event.

“The public programme is a new initiative for us and working out really well,” comments Natalie Gilberd, another member of Wellington Zinefest’s Committee. “We’re holding regular zine-making sessions in collaboration with Matchbox Studios on Cuba Street every Friday evening – which is helping to build a solid community of zinemakers and introducing people to new ideas.” The public programme includes workshops, a lightbox exhibition and talks presented by key people in the literary and zinemaking community.

“Our vision is to support zine practitioners and promote zines as an art form to New Zealand audiences,” says Ya-Wen. “Wellington Zinefest is a showcase, we invite everyone to come along and enjoy.”
