The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth has appointed Paul Brobbel as Len Lye Curator.
The British-born 35-year-old moves into this role after four years at the Govett-Brewster working with the Len Lye Foundation Collection and Archive as Intern, Assistant Collection Manager and most recently acting as Len Lye Curator.
During his time with the museum, Brobbel has developed exhibitions and publications including Len Lye: The New Yorker and Laurence Aberhart: Recent Taranaki Photographs (both 2012) at the Govett-Brewster; Len Lye: Kaleidoscope at City Gallery Wellington (2013); and Len Lye: Agiagiā at the Mangere Arts Centre – Ngā Tohu o Uenuku (2013).
Brobbel is currently supporting the Len Lye: Motion Sketch exhibition at The Drawing Center, New York, opening 16 April – 8 June 2014, curated by former Len Lye Curator Tyler Cann and former Govett-Brewster Art Gallery Director Gregory Burke.
Brobbel is a graduate of the University of Auckland with an M.A (hons.) from the department of Classics and Ancient History (2005) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts from the Museums and Cultural Heritage programme (2006). Previous to working at Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, Paul worked at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa where he was Assistant Collection Manager (Photography).
Brobbel’s expertise in collection management and research will help bring work of Len Lye into greater focus as the Govett-Brewster develops into an expanded museum with the addition of the Len Lye Centre – the home of the artist’s work and archives. Opening in 2015, the new building – designed by award-winning New Zealand architects Patterson Associates – includes expansive exhibition spaces, an archive room, an education studio and a 62-seat cinema. Brobbel will facilitate new scholarship and exhibitions within this dedicated setting, and establish the museums inaugural cinema programme, developing national and international audiences through increased access to the Len Lye Foundation Collection and Archives.
