Creative New Zealand investment round results

The Arts Council of New Zealand will invest $10.18 million in 39 arts organisations in this year’s programmes of multi-year funding for arts organisations.

This brings Creative New Zealand’s total investment spend for the current calendar year to $25.15 million across 81 arts organisations.

The Toi Tōtara Haemata (Tōtara) and Toi Uru Kahikatea (Kahikatea) investment programmes support New Zealand’s arts infrastructure and the development of arts organisations by offering funding for fixed terms of between one  and  five years. This allows organisations to more confidently plan their programmes of activity.

These organisations fill vital roles in New Zealand’s arts infrastructure. Their contribution can include developing new, high-quality work, touring in New Zealand and overseas, collaborating with one another, providing professional development opportunities within their industry or increasing accessibility of the arts for all New Zealanders.

New entrants to the Tōtara programme this year will be Christchurch Arts Festival and Auckland’s Basement Theatre, while Wellington’s Barbarian Productions and Gecko Press enter the Kahikatea programme for the first time.

Toi Tōtara Haemata programme

In 2016, Creative New Zealand requested proposals for eight key roles, after artform reviews were undertaken in theatre and multidisciplinary arts. The results are particularly positive for New Zealand theatre, with a wide range of high-performing organisations now included in the investment programmes. The infrastructure will be strengthened by their contribution, delivering benefits to the theatre sector, communities and audiences alike.

Key roles in theatre will be filled by the following organisations:

  • Basement Theatre, Massive Company and  Bats Theatre for Theatre Development roles
  • The Court Theatre, Auckland Theatre Company and Circa Theatre Incorporated for Main Centre Theatre roles
  • Taki Rua Productions for Māori Theatre and Theatre in Te Reo roles
  • Playmarket for Creative Development Services role
  • Capital E National Theatre for Children for Theatre for Young People role

Four key roles in multidisciplinary arts will be filled by:

  • Auckland Festival, The New Zealand Festival and Christchurch Arts Festival for presenting a multidisciplinary arts festival , two in the North Island and one in the South Island
  • Arts Access Aotearoa for Arts to support participation and access for excluded communities.

Toi Uru Kahikatea programme

In 2016 funding under the Toi Uru Kahikatea programme encompasses the full range of artforms and includes organisations engaging with young people, including the Storylines Children’s Literature Trust and Choirs Aotearoa New Zealand, which develops young singers through the New Zealand Youth Choir. The youth development programmes delivered by The Michael King Studio Trust enable established writers to work with and inspire school children through poetry and creative writing workshops.

Festivals, literary events and publishing support ensures New Zealanders experience high-quality arts, while organisations which tour shows and exhibitions overseas are supported to help  New Zealand arts gain international success. Kahikatea organisations include Makers 101, which will exhibit New Zealand jewellery in Germany and Holland and Indian Ink, which will tour Guru of Chai to Australia and return to North America in 2018.
