SCAPE Public Art is pleased to announce the appointment of Jamie Hanton to the position of Managing Curator 2020–2022.
Jamie joins SCAPE from The Physics Room in Christchurch, where he has been Director since 2016. He will end his tenure there later this year. Previous to that he was Kaitiaki Taonga Toi, Curator of Art Collections, at the University of Canterbury (2014-16) and before that was Director of Blue Oyster Art Project Space (2011-2014). In addition to these roles, Jamie has worked as an independent curator and writer, and has been a consistent voice in New Zealand’s contemporary art discourse for over 10 years working across several public art contexts including commissioning and realising site-specific and site-responsive artworks.
"Ōtautahi Christchurch is the place I call home; SCAPE’s public art has a strong personal resonance for me and my memories of how our city has evolved. It is wonderful to be a part of its ongoing development and to contribute to a community that I feel deeply invested in,” Jamie says.
“We are absolutely delighted to bring Jamie on board and know he will make a meaningful contribution as we grow and build on the excellent legacy of artistic direction over the last twenty-one years of SCAPE,” said Deborah McCormick, Executive Director of SCAPE Public Art.
“We have worked alongside one another in Christchurch for many years and are excited to work together and share in his extensive artistic network gained from working as a curator, writer and director.”
Jamie will take up this position from the beginning of February 2020. His artwork selection will be on show in a range of spaces around Christchurch forming part of a broader six-week festival for the city between Saturday 3 October – Saturday 14 November 2020.
