Creative New Zealand salutes the creator of some of New Zealand’s most distinct landscape and wildlife paintings, Don Binney.

Awarded an OBE for services to the arts in 1995, Mr Binney died unexpectedly this weekend aged in his early 70s.

Born and raised in Auckland, Mr Binney worked in a variety of mediums to present stark and pristine images of sea, sky, native birds and still life.

His work is exhibited widely throughout New Zealand and was the subject of a thirty-year survey show in 1989, and a retrospective exhibition which toured the country from 2003 to 2004. Examples of his work can be found in many public collections including the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and Auckland Art Gallery

More information on Don Binney’s most recent artwork can be found on the Auckland City Gallery Outpost and the New Zealand Herald website.
