BRYN TERFEL New Zealand tour confirmed

“He can roar – with pain, with pleasure, with fierce indignation, filling the hall with full, strong tone. But he can also coo and purr at an extreme pianissimo, making a sound that stays audible only because there is so much in it to feel, as well as to hear.” [The New York Times]

BRYN TERFEL, one of the greatest singers in the world today, has confirmed a four concert tour of New Zealand in June, his only destination in the Southern Hemisphere.

Accompanied by acclaimed New Zealand pianist Terence Dennis, he will perform a selection of popular songs and classical favourites during recitals in Dunedin (Thu 11 June), Christchurch (Sat 13 June), Wellington (Wed 17 June), and Auckland (Sat 20 June).

One of the world’s most sought after international singers, Bryn Terfel’s rich bass-baritone voice, commanding stage presence and sparkling personality touch the hearts of audiences wherever he goes. Born in Wales, his phenomenal musical career spans over two decades and is now at the pinnacle, featuring regular appearances in major opera houses and concert halls around the world including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Covent Garden and the Paris Opera. A Grammy, Classical Brit and Gramophone Award winner, he is also the recipient of a CBE for Services to Opera and the Queen’s Medal for Music.

Aidan Lang, General Director of The NBR New Zealand Opera and producer of this tour, says “Right now Bryn’s at the peak of his musical powers – he’s up there with the best of them and many believe him to be number one. Bryn’s last trip to New Zealand in 2004 was confined to the North Island so this is a marvellous opportunity for all New Zealanders to experience what critics and audiences are raving about.

“Although Bryn made his name as an opera singer,” Lang continues, “he has always maintained a parallel career as a recitalist. And a live recital with Bryn Terfel is something to behold – he’s spell-binding. And because of Bryn’s strong commitment to his family in Wales, this could well be the last time we see him in this part of the world for a considerable while.”

“Singing a lot of opera takes you away from your family for long periods of time,” Bryn says. “I have three young boys and I don’t want to miss them growing up. I’m now at the stage of my career where thankfully I can pick and choose engagements a little more and put myfamily first. I would miss not performing any opera but the plan for the future is that I have only one transatlantic operatic engagement and two or three opera engagements in cities in Europe where it is relatively easy to fly home for a weekend.”

Don’t miss one of the world’s most celebrated artists live in concert, here in New Zealand.
