Creative New Zealand, in partnership with the National University of Samoa, is offering a three month artist residency in Apia, Samoa, in 2014.
The annual residency, established by Creative New Zealand and the university in 2006, offers New Zealand Pasifika artists the opportunity to develop their potential, skills and practice. It provides up to $15,000 for an artist’s stipend including accommodation and travel costs.
The residency will run from August to October 2014. It is open to established Pasifika artists who are resident in New Zealand.
Residency support
Creative New Zealand will offer the selected artist financial support by way of:
- a total stipend of NZ$10,000 for three months
- up to NZ$2,000 towards travel costs; including one return airfare – New Zealand to Apia, Samoa (as well as internal New Zealand flights as required) and insurance
- up to NZ$3000 (being no more than NZ$1,000 per month for three months) towards the costs of accommodation in Samoa for the resident.
Applications are to be provided in the form of a project proposal. The closing date for proposals is 5pm Friday 7 March 2014.
It is important for applicants to be aware that material resources and technology available in New Zealand are comparatively limited in the Pacific. Applicants are encouraged to take this into account as they plan their project proposals.
The 2014 Creative New Zealand/National University of Samoa artist in residence will be announced by 30 June 2014.

Previous recipients
Internationally recognised Samoan choreographer and director Lemi Ponifasio was the 2013 artist in residence. Lemi is one of New Zealand’s most accomplished performing artists, with his innovative work presented at the most prestigious arts festivals in the world.
As part of his residency, Lemi presented a series of lectures and workshops to National University of Samoa students. He also developed a dance and theatre programme at the university based on the work of his internationally acclaimed company MAU, and plans to continue supporting the programme after his residency.
Other previous recipients include: VaHine Collective (Lonnie Hutchinson, Lily Laita and Niki Hastings-McFall), installation artist Tiffany Singh, the late curator Jim Vivieaere, actor and director Nathaniel Lees, and playwright Fiona Collins.
